Pasha joins the Jets
Slough Jets Head Coach Slava Koulikov has just inked a deal that sees Ukranian Pavel Gomeniuk join the Jets from EPL rivals Sheffield Steeldogs.
The experienced 34 year old is now in his 10th season in the United Kingdom having joined the Solihull Barons in the British National League in 2002/03 making 10 appearances to complete the season. He moved to Hull Stingrays and played two seasons there in the BNL, the second as club captain. His next move saw him playing in the top league in the country when he signed for the Newcastle Vipers and alternated his five seasons in the EIHL with the Stingrays and Vipers.
Tony Hand picked him up for 2010/11 bringing him to the Manchester Phoenix where he added leadership to his resume with the “A” on his jersey scoring 9+42 in 54 appearances in the English Premier Ice Hockey League. The following season colleague Andre Payette had been appointed as Player/Coach at Sheffield and took Pavel with him where he put up 9+32 in 52 appearances earning him a recall for the 2012/13 season where he netted 9 times added to 15 assists in 36 games so far this season.
Before coming to the UK the versatile and experienced Gomeniuk enjoyed success in the Ukraine earning him a World Junior Championships call up in 1996/97 at Under 20 level. His senior career started in the Eastern European Hockey League where he carved a promising reputation for himself including winning the treble with Bercut Kiev before moving to the UK.
Proudly announcing his signing Slava Koulikov said; “We are very happy to announce we’ve brought in such an experienced player as Pasha. He has played all three senior leagues in this country and has over 10 years experience of British hockey. He’s won trophies in the EIHL and knows how to win games and trophies. Because of the knowledge he has he will definitely help us in the way we’re looking to go. When I heard he was available I jumped at the chance to bring him in and I’d like to thank Ghislaine and Zoran for allowing this to happen. He will help us offensively and defensively, he is good on the puck and will be a great addition for us for the remainder of the season.”
Pavel will link up with the Jets tomorrow and will make his debut, subject to registration clearance at the weekend against the Swindon Wildcats. We’d like to thank Andre Payette and the Sheffield Steeldogs for allowing this transfer to happen so quickly.
With Pavel’s addition to the team unfortunately the decision has had to be taken to release a non EIHA trained player and Slava had the task of releasing Tomas Valecko from the Jets. Koulikov commented; “Unfortunately bringing Pavel in has meant that we have had to release Tommy. He’s been a real professional, he’s played for the team every shift of every game and he’s played in both defence and up front as needed for us. It’s not a nice part of coaching to have to release a player and I’d like to thank Tommy for his hard work with the team so far this season and wish him all the best for the future.”
Tomas Valecko leaves the Jets immediately with the club’s thanks and best wishes.
Pavel stands at 5 foot 11, weighs 212lbs and shoots left handed. Previous clubs: Berkut Kiev, Sokil Kiev, Vityaz Chekhov, Solihull Kings, Hull Stingrays, Newcastle Vipers, Manchester Phoenix, Sheffield Steeldogs
